Reading

Supporting your child at home.

In order to further support your child's reading at home, we would like to offer the opportunity for you to be able to speak face to face with members of staff who lead on aspects of this crucial life skill. The parent survey from last year identified that those of you who could attend saw great value in the reading support sessions but the vast majority would like a face to face meeting.

We have listened to this feedback and hope that the following arrangement will mean that you are making just one important visit to us for both your parent-teacher meetings from subject areas and have the opportunity, should you wish, to further explore reading at home or reading support for your child.

During the Parent-Teacher meetings, either Ms Kelly, Mr Binns or Mrs Foxon will be available to talk to you specifically about your child and how to further engage their reading.

If you wish to see Ms Foxon to specifically discuss phonics and Fresh Start, she will only be in attendance at the Key Stage Four and Post 16 Parent-Teacher meeting but a separate time can be arranged with her if needed. You do not need to make an appointment, just pop over and speak to us in between your other teacher meetings and we would love to help.

The ability to read effectively is fundamental to many aspects of life and is crucial to our students’ understanding and progress across a wide range of areas of the curriculum. The teaching and development of reading is, therefore, a central priority of all staff and stakeholders.  At Corley Academy, all Curriculum staff are teachers of Literacy and embed opportunities for developing reading in their interactions with students.  Reading develops imagination, experiences and supports conceptual learning. Our reading strategy demonstrates the inextricable link we recognise between reading and communication, developing an understanding that words have meaning, power and consequences. In order to promote this, learners are provided with a language-rich environment, conducive to supporting the acquisition of reading skills at every level.  In addition, we seek to foster in our students a lifelong love of reading where students can find inspiration, pleasure, strength, cultural awareness and a deepened sense of identify and community.
